세계 67개국 146개 도시에 지회를 둔 재외동포 최대규모 경제단체인 세계한인무역협회(월드옥타) 새 회장에 박종범(66) 월드옥타 상임이사가 선출됐다. 월드옥타는 10월 26일 경기도 수원컨벤션센터에서 이사회를 열어 박 상임이사를 제22대 회장으로 뽑았다. 그는 총 256표를 얻어 36표를 얻은 권영현 후보를 220표 차로 제치고 신임 회장에 당선됐다.

박 당선자는 당선 직후 “전쟁과 코로나19, 기후변화 등 세계적 경제위기 상황에서 모국의 발전을 이끄는 데 월드옥타가 힘을 모아야 할 때”라며 “초창기 설립 정신으로 돌아가 소통과 화합으로 조직력이 강한 단체로 육성하겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다. 그는 선거 홍보물을 통해 ‘섬김과 봉사의 리더십’을 슬로건으로 “제2의 도약을 위해 앞장서겠다”고 공약했다.

박 당선자는 1999년 오스트리아 빈에서 창업해 유럽·러시아·중국 등 20개국에서 30여개 계열사를 두고 무역 등으로 1조원 가까이 매출을 올리는 유럽 최대 한상(韓商)그룹을 일궜다.

그는 오스트리아 한인협회장과 한국-오스트리아 친선협회 부회장, 유럽한인회총연합회 회장, 민주평화통일자문회의 유럽·중동·아프리카지역회의 부의장 등을 맡았고, 국민훈장 모란장을 수상했으며, 장보고글로벌재단으로부터 ‘21세기 장보고 상’도 받았다. 박 당선자는 11월 1일 회장 업무를 시작했으며 임기는 2년이다.

Park Jong-beom (66), executive director of the World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Association (World-OKTA), has been elected the new chairman to lead the largest economic organization for overseas Koreans, with branches in 146 cities in 67 countries.

World-OKTA held a board meeting at the Suwon Convention Center in Gyeonggi Province on Oct. 26 to elect Park as its 22nd chairman. He received 256 votes, beating Kwon Young-hyun, who got 36 votes, by 220 votes to become the new chairman.

“It is time for World-OKTA to join forces to lead the development of its home country in the face of global economic crises, such as war, COVID-19 and climate change,” Park said right after his victory. “We will return to the spirit of the early days and foster it as a group with strong organizational power through communication and harmony.” He pledged to “take the lead for a second

leap forward” under the slogan of “Leadership of Serving and Service” through election promotional materials.

Park founded Europe’s largest Korean traders group in Vienna, Austria, in 1999, which has more than 30 affiliates in 20 countries, including Europe, Russia and China, and generates nearly US$760 million in sales through trade.

He was president of the Austrian Korean Society, vice chairman of the Korea-Austria Friendship Association, president of the European Assembly of Korean Associations and vice chairman of the European, Middle East and African Regional Conferences of The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. He was awarded the Peony Medal of the Order of Civil Merit and received the 21st Century Chang Po-go Award from the Chang Po-go Global Foundation.

Park began his presidency on Nov. 1, and his term will last two years.
