우크라 고려인 돕는 제임스 안 LA한인회장 ‘뜨거운 동포애 느껴’ > 자유 게시판

“전쟁으로 한 순간에 삶의 터전을 잃어 살길이 막막한 이들이 희망을 품도록 돕는 일이라 한순간도 망설이지 않았죠.” 서울 잠실 롯데호텔월드에서 열린 ‘2023 세계한인회장대회’에 참가한 제임스 안(43) 미국 로스앤젤레스(LA) 한인회장은 10월5일 언론 인터뷰에서 “고려인을 도우면서 뜨거운 동포애를 느꼈다”며 이같이 말했다.

안 회장은 지난해 2월 우크라이나와 러시아 간 전쟁이 발발하면서 고려인이 피난길에 올랐다는 소식을 접하자마자 화랑청소년재단과 함께 한인사회를 대상으로 모금 운동을 벌였다. 한 달 만에 모은 6만5천 달러(9천만원)를 우크라이나 인근 국가인 몰도바에 모여든 고려인 피난민에게 전달했다. 이후에도 지속해서 모금했고 올해 4월에는 우크라이나를 직접 방문해 고려인사회와 고려인학교인 정수리학교를 지원했다.

지금까지 지원한 금액이 20만 달러(2억7천만원)에 달한다고 전한 그는 “아무것도 챙기지 못하고 빈 몸으로 피난 온 고려인들은 한국이나 제3국으로 가기 위해서 수속 절차를 밟는 동안 먹고 잘 비용조차도 없는 상황이었다”며 “현지의 한인 선교사의 도움으로 성금이 제대로 전달될 수 있었다”고 설명했다.

전쟁 중인 곳을 방문하는 일은 쉽지 않은 일일 텐데 어떻게 용기를 냈는지 궁금했다. 그는 “박윤숙 화랑청소년재단 총재와 함께 어떻게 도울지를 고민하다가 성금이 제대로 필요한 곳에 쓰일 수 있도록 현장을 가봐야 한다고 의기투합해 바로 비행기표를 끊었다”며 “십시일반으로 성금을 보탠 한인분들에게 상황을 제대로 전할 필요도 있었다”고 설명했다.

안 회장은 “피난처에서 만난 고려인은 모두 노인과 여성, 어린아이들뿐이었다”며 “젊은 남자들은 모두 전쟁터로 나간 상황으로 생사 확인을 못 해 발을 동동 구르고 있었다”고 안타까워했다. 그는 “중학생 두 딸을 데리고 탈출한 미망인 고려인 여성에게 항공료를 지원해 한국의 광주 고려인마을에서 안식을 찾게 됐다는 소식을 들었을 때는 무엇보다도 기뻤다”고 털어놨다.

코로나19로 어려워진 LA 한인들의 정부 지원 수령도 적극 도와

LA에서 식당업을 하던 그는 2018년부터 한인회 봉사를 시작했고, 2021년부터 2년간 회장을 역임했고 지난해 선거에서 연임됐다. LA한인회 역사상 첫 2세 한인회장이며 최연소이기도 하다. 그는 “주류사회에서 자리 잡은 2세들이 한인 커뮤니티를 위해 봉사할 수 있는 자리를 만드는 게 한인회의 역할”이라고 강조했다.

안 회장은 코로나19로 어려워진 현지 한인들이 정부로부터 제대로 지원을 받을 수 있도록 다양한 중재자 역할에도 앞장섰다. 이를 통해 정부로부터 한인들에게 나온 지원금이 6천만 달러(811억원)에 달한다며 그는 “한인회가 동포사회의 든든한 구심점으로 자리를 잡게 된 것이 가장 큰 보람”이라고 자부했다.

“I didn’t hesitate for a second to help those and nurture hope for those who had been displaced by the war and were facing a bleak reality. I felt a great sense of compatriotism while helping the Koryo people,” James Ahn, 43, president of the Korean American Association of Los Angeles (KAALA), said in a media interview on Oct. 5, after attending the 2023 World Congress of Korean Association Presidents at Lotte Hotel World in Jamsil, Seoul.

As soon as Ahn heard that Koreans were fleeing the war between Ukraine and Russia in February last year, he and the Hwarang Youth Foundation launched a fundraising campaign among the Korean community. Within a month, they raised US$65,000 and sent it to Korean refugees in Moldova, a neighboring country of Ukraine. After this, he continued to raise money, and in April this year, he traveled to Ukraine himself to support the Koryo community and the Korean School, Jungsuri.

“The Koryo-saram refugees, who fled with nothing, had no money to eat or sleep while they went through the procedures to go to South Korea or a third country,” said Ahn, adding that $200,000 has been donated so far. “The money has reached the refugees with the aid of Korean missionaries in the area.”

He then spoke about how the need to help provided him with the courage to visit a place at war. “Park Yoon-sook, the president of the Hwarang Youth Foundation, and I were initially pondering how we could help and eventually agreed that I needed to go to the site so that the donations could be used where they were needed, so I booked a flight immediately,” he said. “I also needed to be able to tell the situation accurately to the Korean people who had come together and donated money to help others.

“All the Koryo people I met at the refuge were elderly, women and children. The younger men had gone to the battlefields, and those in the shelter paced back and forth, not knowing if they were alive or dead,” Ahn said in sympathy. “I was overjoyed when I heard that a widowed Koryo woman who had escaped with her two middle school-aged daughters had been given airfare and had found safety in the Korean city of Gwangju.”

Helping Korean Americans in Los Angeles receive government aid during COVID-19

A former restaurant owner in Los Angeles, Ahn began serving on the board in 2018 and was elected president for two years in 2021 and reelected last year. He is the first second-generation Korean American president in the KAALA’s history and also the youngest. “The role of a Korean Association is to create a space for secondgeneration Koreans who have established themselves in mainstream society to serve the Korean community,” he said.

Ahn also served as a mediator to ensure that local Koreans affected by the pandemic received proper support from the government.

“My greatest reward is that the Korean Association has become a strong pillar of the Korean community,” he said, noting that the government has provided more than $60 million in assistance to Koreans.
