안녕하세요. ‘2023 세계한인정치인포럼’이 3박 4일 일정으로 오늘(11월 13일) 막을 올립니다. 서울에서 여러분을 다시 만나게 돼 기쁩니다. 영상 축사를 보내주신 김진표 국회의장님, 이 자리에 직접 참석해주신 박진 외교부 장관님과 이기철 재외동포청장님, 김영근 재외동포협력센터장님 등 모든 귀빈께 감사드립니다. 또한 재외동포협력센터의 리더십과 헌신, 그리고 올해 포럼의 성공을 위해 보이지 않는 곳에서 애쓰신 직원들께 감사드립니다. 여러분이 없었다면 이번 포럼이 불가능했을 것입니다.

K-팝, K-드라마, K-푸드 같은 한국 문화의 성장은 재외동포들에게 자부심의 원천이 됐습니다. 지난 6월 5일 재외동포청 설립된 것은 700만 명이 넘는 재외동포들의 목소리에 귀를 기울이고, 한국과 재외동포들이 함께 성장할 수 있는 의미 있는 발전이자 진일보라고 생각합니다.

2007년 한국계 정치인 네트워크를 목적으로 출범한 세계한인정치인협의회는 10여년간 지속적 성장과 발전을 거듭해 왔으며, 올해도 70여 명이 참석한 것이 이런 성장을 증명한다고 생각합니다. 지난해 제8차 포럼 이후 세계 한인 정치인들에게 축하할 일이 많이 생겼습니다. 멜리사 리 뉴질랜드 국회의원의 6선 성공, 실비아 루크 미국 하와이주 하원의원의 하와이주 부지사 당선, 조성훈(스탠 조) 캐나다 온타리오주 교통부 부장관의 온타리오주 장기요양부 장관 승진 및 다른 한인 정치인들의 재선과 첫 당선을 모두 축하합니다.

우리 모두에게 가장 중요한 것은 2023년이 한국전쟁 정전 70주년이기도 하다는 점입니다. 우리는 오늘의 대한민국이 세계 경제 속에 당당히 설 수 있도록 한국전쟁 때 목숨을 바치고 희생하신 모든 분을 절대 잊지 말아야 합니다.

오늘 시작되는 세계한인정치인포럼에서 한국계 정치인과 지도자들의 역할에 대한 생각과 통찰, 그리고 미래세대가 각자의 나라에서 번창하는 뿌리 깊은 나무로 성장할 수 있는 방안과 한민족에 대한 깊은 자부심을 나눌 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이러한 K-정신과 한국의 역사와 유산, 문화에 대한 자부심은 우리의 네트워크를 강화하고, 우리가 한국과 우리나라를 잇는 다리가 될 수 있도록 힘을 실어줄 것입니다. 우리 네트워크는 우리의 자산입니다.

이 자리에 참석하신 모든 분께 다시 한번 감사드리며 앞으로의 발전과 교류를 이어 나가는 기억에 남을 포럼이 되기를 고대합니다. 감사합니다.

Hello everyone. As chair and on behalf of the executive of the council, welcome to the 2023 Global Korean Politicians Forum (GKPC)!

Let me take a moment to acknowledge a true champion who is also a member of the executive of the GKPC, Mark Keam, who valiantly overcame near insurmountable health challenges and is here with us today.

Also, I would like to thank the leadership and dedication of the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center and the dedicated staff who worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of this year’s forum. This would not have been possible without all of you.

The growth of Korean culture, such as K-pop, K-drama and K-food, has become a source of pride for overseas Koreans, and I believe that the Overseas Koreans Agency is a significant development and step forward to listen to the voices of the more than 7 million people in the Korean diaspora, and for Korea and overseas Koreans to grow together.

Launched in 2007 to connect politicians of Korean descent, our Global Korean Politicians Council has continued to grow and evolve for more than a decade. This year’s attendance of more than 70 participants is proof of this growth.

As a council, we have much to celebrate since we last saw one another at the sixth term election of MP Melissa Lee of New Zealand, the historic election of Sylvia Luke as the 16th lieutenant governor of Hawaii, the promotion of MPP Stan Cho to the minister of long-term care in the province of Ontario, Canada, and the winners of several other reelections and first-time elections! You know who you are! Congratulations!

And most importantly for all of us, 2023 is also the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. We must never forget all those who served and sacrificed their lives during the war so that today’s Korea can stand proudly among the strongest economies of the world.

During the forum, I hope that you can share your insights on the role of politicians and leaders of Korean descent around the world, and ways for future generations to grow into deep-rooted trees that thrive in their respective countries while also feeling deep pride in their Korean ethnicity.

This K-spirit and pride in our shared Korean history, heritage and culture will strengthen our network and empower us to be the bridge between Korea and our respective nations. Our network is indeed our net worth. Thank you.
